The pistachio cultivar is native to the Middle East, can reach heights of up to 12 meters and is a dioecious species: the unisexual flowers are present on separate individuals, a male tree is needed to fertilize 10 female plants.

The fruit, bright green in color, has a hard and thin shell, containing the seed commonly called "pistachio".

The fruiting cycle is biennial, this together with the climatic variations makes the production irregular.
